Articulated dolls made of clay, wood, ivory or bone were girls' toys all over the Roman Empire from the 1st to the 5th century. In Rome alone, 91 parts of dolls have been found among the grave goods of children, or sometimes of an unmarried young woman. Rich children played with ivory doll whose limbs were also articulated at the knees and elbows. These articulations are absent on the bone dolls. The simpler bone dolls are often found without their head. These dolls most likely wore dolls' clothes, but this disintegrates quickly after burial; their necklaces and bracelets, however, sometimes survive.
