Different tools were used to pierce holes (e.g. to assist in sewing) in leather and fabrics: needles, awls, scratch awls, bodkins, etc. They were variously made of wood, bone, copper or iron. The needle has an eye while the bodkin does not, while the awl normally has a shaped tip and the scratch awl a conical one. To date, there are no archaeological finds of bone needles sufficiently fine for tailor's work.
